WINONA, Minn. — Monday was the first day the new Winona Gundersen Health System facility could accept patients.

The 86,000-square-foot facility features Urgent Care, laboratory, imaging and infusion services.

Regional director Chuck Johnson marveled at the collaboration and teamwork to make the opening a reality.

“This is a project that we’ve had literally over 100 people working on,” Johnson said. “From construction to clinicians, for many many months. Everything was about taking care of patients.”

When determining the needs of the facility, Johnson said they relied on the people caring for patients first hand.

“We have state of the art equipment, and the staff working here had a chance to take part in the design process,” Johnson said. “It’s functionally and efficiently laid out.”

The services offered are in part designed to keep patients closer to home.

“Many of the services that we plan for both Phase 1 and Phase 2, are the services that we know patients were traveling for quite frequently,” Johnson said.

Phase 2, which will open in May of 2020, will add primary care, a pharmacy, physical and occupational therapy and an outpatient surgery center.
