As I See It
Congress trying to tackle more than impeachment

It seems the sole focus of Congress these days is the effort to impeach President Trump. Trump himself has said that is the case, sending out tweets accusing House Democrats of getting nothing done in Congress and being consumed with impeachment. But the truth is Congress has been busy passing bills. The House has passed nearly 400 bills this session. But 80 pecent of those have hit a snag in the Senate, where they will likely die. In total Congress has passed just 70 bills into law this year, far fewer than in most terms. And at least ten of those bills are renaming federal post offices or Veterans Affairs facilities. House-passed bills to provide citizenship for Dreamers, expanding LGBTQ rights, taking on climate change and lowering prescription drug costs, are all DOA in the U.S. Senate. Now, lawmakers are scrambling to reach a deal as another possible government shutdown looms. Throw in the impeachment efforts, and the Christmas holiday, and it seems little more will get done this year. Trump may call this a do-nothing Congress, but it is not for a lack of trying.
