As I See It
Is Wisconsin’s Foxconn deal heading to court?

It seemed inevitable this day would come. There is growing concern over the deal between the state of Wisconsin and Foxconn. And it is looking increasingly likely that the whole deal could end up in court. President Trump and former Governor Scott Walker wooed Foxconn to the state, with the company promising $10 billion in investment and 13,000 jobs. Two years later, the plant has not been built. What is being built isn’t what they promised, and is only one-twentieth the size. Gone are plans to build flat screen televisions. In fact, we don’t know what they’re really preparing to build. Foxconn has even suggested it could be automated coffee kiosks. And all of the players who inked the initial deal are out of the picture. Clearly, things have changed. But there is word that Foxconn still plans to apply for taxpayer-funded job credits, even though it hasn’t actually done any of the things it said it would. The state has said Foxconn won’t get any tax credits, and that word has Foxconn ruffling its feathers. But the company also seemingly isn’t willing to rewrite the contract, suggesting a legal showdown is the next step. Foxconn needs to make clear exactly what it plans to build at its still under construction facility. Until then, Wisconsin taxpayers shouldn’t be on the hook for a single penny.
