Release of drug suspect on signature bond draws police criticism
La Crosse police are criticizing the release of a drug suspect following a court appearance on Monday.
Denzel Meadows of La Crosse is facing two charges of delivering fentanyl during controlled buys last week.
Meadows was let out of jail on a signature bond, and a message from the police department notes that Meadows is accused of dealing heroin, and of felony possession of a firearm.
Meadows’s girlfriend, Brittany Jones, also faces heroin and firearm charges, and was released from jail after appearing in court.
In another La Crosse court case on Monday, a driver recently placed on probation for drug charges was busted for drunk driving.
City police stopped Juanita Downs Owens early Sunday morning, after she reportedly failed to yield at a stop sign on Vine Street.
Owens says she thought another driver at the intersection had a stop sign instead.
It could be the 3rd O-W-I charge for Owens, who was given five years probation in October for a drug trafficking charge dating back to 2016.

the police should understand by now that bail or bond has NOTHING to do with charges or recidivism! It’s for guaranteeing to appear at future court hearings. If the bond is violated the conditions should be strengthened or backed by some cash but never because police say so-that’s not police business it’s between the court and the accused
