La Crosse is # 1, the best holiday town among Mississippi River cities of a certain size.

That honor comes from the holiday survey conducted by the La Crosse-based ‘River Travel’ magazine.

Its publisher, Brent Hanifl, hopes that the survey might persuade visitors from bigger cities, like St. Paul, to get to La Crosse for holiday fun.

La Crosse was tops in the 30,000 to 60,000 population category, while Prairie du Chien finished 1st among cities between 5000 and 15,000 people.

Marquette, McGregor, De Soto, and Lansing all placed high in the survey for their holiday attractions.

Winning the title of overall best river city for the holidays was Muscatine, Iowa, a short distance downriver from Davenport and Rock Island.

The city of 22,000 scored high marks for its “Holiday Stroll” event.
