Holmen’s Virk repeats, as five area spellers head to state bee in Madison

Five students from the La Crosse area have correctly spelled their way into Wisconsin’s state spelling finals in Madison. 

The overall winner of the bee was Simran Virk of Holmen Middle School. Virk also won the 2019 regional.

The bee lasted just over an hour, with Virk spelling “sapphire” correctly to take the regional title.

The spellers from schools in Holmen, Onalaska and West Salem were the top finishers at the CESA-4 regional bee on Thursday. 

Twenty-seven students from 15 area schools took part in the contest at West Salem. 

She will be joined in Madison on March 7 by another Holmen Middler, Kaetryn Oliver, along with Krishna Ailiani of Onalaska Middle School, Zachary Noronha of West Salem Elementary and Lewis Go of St. Patrick Elementary in Onalaska.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
