Gordy’s Market in north La Crosse closes for good

A north La Crosse grocery store has closed officially, after years of speculation about how long it would stay in business.

Gordy’s Market at the northwest corner of George and Gillette has posted signs telling customers it is closed, as of Wednesday.

Food stores have operated at that intersection for decades under different names, including Birnbaum’s, Skogen’s and Piggly Wiggly.

The Gordy’s store was constructed in the early 1900s.

Customers of the George Street market have been prepared for a possible closing for at least three years.

There is concern that much of north La Crosse could now be considered a “food desert” without a standard grocery store, even though there are Kwik Trip convenience stores within a few blocks of the Gordy’s location.
