Workers shouldn’t have to choose between health and a paycheck

In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, many people are being told to work from home. That is fine for some whose jobs allow, but not for everyone. In fact, many people are having to choose between their health and a paycheck. If they go to work, they get paid, but increase their chances of catching the virus. If they don’t go in to work, they may preserve their health but damage their wallet. That is why Wisconsin U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin that would require U.S. employers to provide their workers with paid sick leave during a public health crisis such as this. Baldwin’s bill would require employers to allow workers to gradually earn 7 days of paid sick leave, and provide an additional 14 days of sick leave to be available during any public health emergency. It is estimated that one in four U.S. workers, more than 32 million people, have no paid sick days. Requiring employers to provide sick leave would not ensure workers can take care of themselves and their families, it will also help slow the spread of the virus. Vice President Mike Pence appears on board with the plan, recommending that employers ensure their sick leave policies are consistent with public health guidelines. Workers in the richest country in the world should not have to choose between their health and their wealth.
