Gundersen expecting more virus testing, and more patients
As we’ve heard from La Crosse County health officials, coronavirus is affecting several younger people, not just the older population.
A large percentage of the COVID-19 patients in the hospital are younger, according to infection specialist Megan Meller at Gundersen.
“About 40 per cent of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 are those under the age of 60, and we’re hearing about teenagers, 20 year olds, 30 year olds, 40 year olds…sometimes placed on ventilators,” Meller said.
She added that everybody could have some sort of risk of being infected, so the best way to avoid spread is to keep distance, and wash your hands.
More people, who want to be tested for COVID-19, can be seen at Gundersen in La Crosse, and can get results more quickly than just a week ago.
Meller says wearing a face mask in public to protect yourself from others is not a guarantee that you won’t get sick. Gundersen continues to ask for more masks and related supplies, to be sure that demand can be met when COVID cases rise.
