Onalaska’s assistant fire chief will be the top man in the department for now.

Troy Gudie was appointed interim chief Monday night by the police and fire commission, and the city website now identifies Gudie as “interim fire chief.”

The Onalaska city council has a special meeting planned for Tuesday night, where the process of hiring a new chief is likely to be discussed.

Chief Billy Hayes resigned last week, saying he wants to have more time with his family, and do more work training firefighters and lecturing.
