Recession Plan being considered by City of La Crosse

The city of La Crosse could lose almost $6 million in tax revenue this year, in large part because of the coronavirus pandemic.

To avoid such a big loss, the city council is being asked to pass an Economic Recession Plan for La Crosse.

The plan is designed to anticipate a declining economy, and make adjustments to help the city.

Mayor Tim Kabat said City Hall needs such a plan soon, arguing that the pandemic shows how critical local services are.

The coronavirus has caused a severe cutback in city operations, hotel room taxes, and fines. The shutdown of the La Crosse Center, for construction, didn’t help either.

The city council finance committee was told Thursday night that La Crosse may have a $5.9 million shortfall for the year, a drop of nearly 9 percent in the city’s general fund.
