A total of 59 businesses in La Crosse were told today they will be getting emergency relief grants totaling $366,200 from the city.

According to applications, the money will help sustain 948 jobs, as businesses have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.

A total of 114 businesses requested just over $1.1 million originally. Some were denied for being located outside the city. Others had unpaid taxes or utilities, that disqualified them.

The city council originally approved $350,000 to fund the Small Business Relief Grant Program, which included $150,000 from the HUD Community Development Block Grant (CDBG).

Couleecap also contributed $18,600, and rewarded eight businesses.

The city said it did fund all eligible businesses that applied. Another $174,000 in HUD CDBG funds from the CARES Act will be considered by the city council at its May 14 meeting.

To qualify, businesses had to have 75 employees or less. The city awarded $5,000 per 10 employees, up to $25,000.
