The La Crosse County Health Department said it will apply to have the National Guard set up a COVID-19 testing site.

The announcement Friday was a change from Tuesday’s media update. Health Department Director Jen Rombalski said the county health department and community partners decided testing was one area that could still use improvement.

“Our residents deserve us bringing in a resource if there is one available to increase testing so we have a better understanding of what is happening in our community,” Rombalski said.

The health department will keep residents updated on the status of its application for a site.

Rombalski added there may be a spike in people community into the community as leases end for college students. The health department is working on messaging for the influx.

“That event is not something we can avoid,” Rombalski said. “Those individuals need to move out of their locations. We are going to try to do our best to makes sure that event is as safe as possible.”

She was optimistic that the increased traffic would help local businesses and restaurants.
