No matter the court’s ruling, it’s still a good idea to social distance

That was a rather abrupt about-face. With a ruling by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, Wisconsin went from being cautious amid the pandemic to, in the words of Governor Tony Evers, “The wild west.” Just when we were getting good at our social distancing, just when we made real progress in slowing the spread of the virus, now its back to high-fives and music concerts and crowded meetings and lecture halls and back-slapping buddies at the bar? Probably not. But the door got swung wide open with the court’s ruling, and the legislature’s failure to adopt its own plan into law, which left a lot of uncertainty for business owners, government officials and those who have to enforce our laws. So maybe there are no more rules to keep us safe, so its up to us. It doesn’t seem smart yet to hang out with large groups of  people. I want to visit my children and give them a hug, but I know the time isn’t right yet. I want to go have a beer with good friends. But not yet. I want a vacation but am not ready to get on a plane. As hard as it’s been, we’ve done a good job working to stop the spread. We should not risk doing away with all our safe practices no matter what the court says.
