No new cases in La Crosse, as Wisconsin reports second-most cases; Iowa death toll hits high as state reopens; Minnesota reports most-ever cases

After back-to-back days totaling nine confirmed cases, La Crosse County confirmed zero Covid-19s on Friday.

The county did also announce a free drive-thru testing site May 21 at the Omni Center in Onalaska with the Wisconsin National Guard.

The site is for La Crosse County resident aged 5 and older, who is currently experiencing symptoms, including fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chills, headache, muscle pain, loss of smell or sore throat — even if at mild severity.

Thursday, Vernon County reported its eighth case of the virus. The county has had a case a day for four days, totaling five cases. Trempealeau County remains at seven confirmed Friday.

Statewide, Wisconsin reported 11 deaths and 410 cases — the second most cases in a single day.

Minnesota set a record for most cases in a single day at 805, along with reporting another 20 deaths from the virus. The previous case high in the state was 786 back on May 7. Minnesota has had 20 or more deaths in 10 of the past 11 days.

Winona County reported another case, bringing its total to 75. Houston County remains at two.

In Iowa, another single-day high in deaths, as the state reopens, while Gov. Kim Reynods says a continued lockdown would come at a “social cost.”

Iowa saw 18 deaths for the second time in four days. The state has seen four consecutive days now with double-digit deaths — 65 in total — for the first time ever.

Sixty-five people have died over the last four days, bringing the state’s total to 336.  

Allamakee County added one to its case total of 116 on Friday.
