La Crosse County finances a little better than expected during shutdown
The coronavirus has led to massive business problems and very high unemployment in the U.S., and La Crosse County is no exception.
“These are the worst numbers I’ve seen during the four recessions I’ve experienced as an adult in my lifetime, and I’m a bit old,” says County administrator Steve O’Malley.
He tells the La Crosse County Board that local sales tax revenue is down 10 per cent from this time a year ago.
But O’Malley adds that the county has enough money on reserve to sustain losses in the sales tax for a while, and spending is down in many areas.
Only 9 county employees have been furloughed, and about 300 are doing their jobs from home.
