Gundersen specialist says second wave of COVID-19 has started
The second wave of coronavirus has begun in the La Crosse area, according to Gundersen infection specialist Megan Meller.
She’s responding to record daily highs for COVID-19 reported in La Crosse County two days this week.
Meller tells WIZM’s La Crosse Talk that increased activity in the area, combined with much more testing, have combined to raise the number of cases in the county above 100.
Meller says wearing face masks is still a good idea, because it appears people can be infected for two or three days before they start showing symptoms, unlike the regular flu, where symptoms appear sooner.
Meller says the increase was expected once stay-at-home orders were lifted in May, but the economy was going to have to reopen eventually.
