Committee on school policing in La Crosse still under discussion
The La Crosse school board is getting ready to form a committee on the future of school resource officers in the district.
A contract with the La Crosse police to put officers in city schools expires a year from now.
Board president Laurie Cooper Stoll said at a board workshop Monday night that she wants to be sure the public can comment on having police in school.
A school board vote to form a study committee is expected in early July.
Board member Juan Jimenez hopes that such a committee is given a specific goal.
“Having that set explicitly, reviewing the specifics of what it is we want to do, I would not want to go into this type of conversation and not have that set ahead of time,” said Jimenez.
The school district has until next June to decide whether to continue the resource officer program, which costs $250,000 per year.
