La Crosse County is a leader in new virus cases
La Crosse County has now exceeded 300 cases of COVID-19, and has recorded at least 20 new cases for eight days in a row.
State health experts say La Crosse and Oshkosh, college towns with lots of young adults, are seeing the fastest spread in Wisconsin this month.
Dr. Ryan Westergaard, who’s the chief medical officer for the Department of Health Services, says that fact should affect how the state tackles the virus right now, with more focus on the college age population in university towns.
State health secretary Andrea Palm says the higher numbers among people in their 20’s seems to show ‘reduced adherence’ to practices like wearing face covers, and social distancing.
But overall, Palm says Wisconsin has done a ‘remarkable job’ in trying to flatten the curve of COVID infection.
According to Wisconsin state standards, La Crosse, Trempealeau, and Grant Counties are at ‘high’ levels of coronavirus activity.
Vernon, Monroe, and Jackson Counties have ‘medium’ activity.
