August sentencing for Melvina couple who kept children in cages

The sentencing for a Monroe County couple convicted of child neglect is scheduled for a month from now.

Travis and Amy Headrick are set to be sentenced in Sparta on August 7th at 8:30 a.m.

The hearing is expected to last all morning before Judge Todd Ziegler.

The Headricks reached a plea agreement earlier this year on charges filed in 2018, of keeping their children in homemade cages.

They were supposed to be sentenced this week, but that was postponed because of concerns about COVID-19.

Spectators connected to the case will be allowed to attend the hearing in person, and are asked to bring their own face coverings for safety reasons.

The Headricks avoided a trial by making pleas to charges of neglect and false imprisonment.

They admitted that they sometimes confined their children, aged 10 and older, to prevent the kids from harming themselves or each other.

The case has led to picketing and demonstrations against the couple whenever they have appeared at the Monroe County courthouse.
