Parking consultant has new ideas for downtown La Crosse

Parking problems in La Crosse won’t be solved overnight.

That’s one piece of advice from the most recent study of the city’s parking needs by Rich and Associates.

The consulting firm reviews local parking supply and demand every few years.

In the newest report to be presented to city leaders next week, Rich says downtown La Crosse has plenty of parking spaces available at busy times of the day, but there’s a misperception that if drivers can’t find an open spot near their destination, they think there’s a shortage of spaces.

The report recommends installing more signs to direct people to ramps and parking lots, promoting more bicycle use, and continuing alternate side parking.

Rich says city ramps should have digital signs telling you how many spaces are open on each level.

The report says La Crosse exceeds a goal of having 50 per cent of downtown parking available to the public.

La Crosse’s board of public works will receive the report on Monday.
