Vernon County marked its first traffic fatality in 2020 Sunday.

The Sheriff’s Office was called to a one-vehicle accident on State Hwy. 56 near County Road SS in the Town of Liberty around 3:17 p.m. Sunday afternoon. A vehicle and its trailer rolled, ejecting 46-year-old Dustin McCartney of Richland Center who was not wearing a seat belt. McCartney was pronounced dead at the scene.

McCartney was also traveling with a dog. The dog was taken to the Vernon County Humane Society for possible injuries.

The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office said heavy rain could have been a factor in the accident.
