La Crosse jail still COVID free
La Crosse County has had more than 900 cases of COVID-19 since the outbreak began, but none of those cases have been among prisoners in the county jail, according to Sheriff Jeff Wolf.
The sheriff tells a county law committee that his staff has done a good job of screening people admitted to jail, and keeping the facility clean with steps such as UVC lighting.
Wolf says one jailer did test positive after returning from vacation, but he did not come back to work right away, and has since recovered.
Three months ago, Sheriff Wolf reported that the average daily total of prisoners in jail had fallen from around 200 early in the year to under 100.
As of Tuesday night, the jail population was 79, although the sheriff says prisoner numbers have been up in the 90’s lately.
