More pumping onto north-side streets, as basements get filled in

Several north La Crosse homes will be allowed to pump water from basements onto the street, hopefully for the last time.

The basements in those houses are being filled to prevent recurring flooding because of high groundwater.

City engineer Randy Turtenwald told the board of public works that utility work is being done at those homes by a special contractor, to move utility lines so the basements can be filled with concrete.

The latest permits for pumping are going to homes in the area of Charles and Liberty Streets.

Turtenwald says our hot, dry summer has given those homeowners a little break, with groundwater levels unusually low.

The board of public works has voted to waive permit fees for a group of homes getting utilities connected as part of the filling-in process.
