Homeless center dispute put on hold by La Crosse’s city council

The fight over a proposed resource center to help the homeless could go on for a few more weeks in La Crosse.

Catholic Charities withdrew a plan to place a resource center on 5th Avenue, following loud objections by neighbors.

On Thursday night, city council member Chris Kahlow said the downtown neighborhood group joins the Washburn neighborhood in opposing the plan, as well.

Kahlow favors giving Catholic Charities a year to come up with a new plan.

Others on the council don’t want to have the charity wait a full year, and voted to defer the issue for a month, to get more information about their legal options.

Catholic Charities wants to move the resource offices out of its current warming center on 3rd Street, because of health department requirements for limiting occupancy of the building during the COVID-19 pandemic.
