Racial Equity team proposed for La Crosse

After a summer of demonstrations on racial matters all over America, including in La Crosse, what should local leaders do next to battle against racism?

The Human Rights Commission of La Crosse is recommending a ‘racial equity team’ which would help city government deal with inequality.

Caroline Gregerson of the commission says the new group would consist of seven people already working for the city of La Crosse, appointed by the mayor, to represent different departments while also promoting diversity.

The commission has approved a statement of goals which includes advocating for system change while ‘interrupting racism.’

One suggestion made to commission members at a Tuesday meeting was to replace ‘interrupting’ racism with ‘ending’ it.

The commission is also considering inviting Police Chief Shawn Kudron to a future meeting, to discuss possible changes in the school resource officer program in La Crosse public schools.
