New highway shop being prepared for La Crosse County

The season for road salt and snowplows will be here soon, and La Crosse County is making plans for helping its highway crews.

The proposed county budget for 2021 calls for the first phase of a larger highway shop at St. Joseph Ridge.

The facility would combine a shop the county already has operates on the ridge, and another one in Shelby.

County administrator Steve O’Malley says the new shop could help the county reduce its workforce, and the amount of fuel used by highway department vehicles.

County highway commissioner Ron Chamberlain says the road crews are short of storage space at this time.

The $4 million building at St. Joseph also would include areas for keeping road salt and sand, and a brine-making facility.
