No city-sponsored ceremony for Indigenous Day this year
Many government workers may get a day off Monday because it’s a federal holiday, but the city of La Crosse won’t have a formal celebration, because of COVID-19.
The city doesn’t recognize the second Monday of October as Columbus Day any more.
Two years ago, city leaders changed the name of the government holiday to Indigenous People’s Day.
A celebration involving Mayor Tim Kabat and other local leaders took place last year at Myrick Park, where some Native American burial mounds are located.
That observance has been called off, but the city has landscaped the area, so people can easily see where the mounds are.
