Coulee Region has 17 COVID deaths over holiday weekend

Multiple deaths due to COVID-19 in the Coulee Region reported coming off the holiday weekend.

In all, 17 people have died from the virus dating back to Nov. 26.

La Crosse suffered two deaths, bringing its total to 36. It’s the county’s fourth death in six days, 13th death this month and 31st death since Oct. 1. All deaths out of La Crosse have been people aged 60 and over.

Trempealeau reported two deaths Monday, bringing its total to 17. The county has had eight of those in the past 15 days and 12 deaths in November.

Vernon County reported three deaths Monday and three Friday, bringing its total to 18 — 15 of those this month.

Monroe reported its 15th death Monday and has had six deaths in the past seven days.

Winona reported two deaths Friday and another Saturday. Of the county’s 30 deaths, eight have come in a 10-day span this month.

Houston reported three deaths Monday and another Friday — four of its five total deaths. All three deaths from Monday were aged 80 or over.

The only area counties not to report any deaths from the area were Jackson and Buffalo. Buffalo County only puts out COVID information on Mondays.

As far as cases, La Crosse County added 76 Monday, bringing the total to 8,087, according to the state. The county is averaging 98 cases a day the past week. La Crosse’s positivity rate over the past week is 35.64%.


Here’s a look at cases and hospitalizations from those counties:
VERNON: 50 new cases since Nov. 27 (20.9 cases/day, past week – 1,143 total – 291 active – 17 hospitalized)
TREMPEALEAU: 102 new cases since Nov. 25 (24.3 cases/day, past week – 2,387 total – 523 active – 21 hospitalized)
MONROE: 176 new cases since Nov. 25 (36.6 cases/day, past week – 2,660 total – 387 active – 14 hospitalized)
JACKSON: 75 new cases since Nov. 25 (19.1 cases/day, past week – 1,722 total – 204 active – 12 hospitalized)
WINONA: 79 new cases Monday (55.3 cases/day, past week – 2,848 total)
HOUSTON: 15 new cases (16.1 cases/day, past week – 713 total)


Statewide, Wisconsin added 2,534 cases, 96 hospitalizations and six deaths.

The state is averaging 4,209.1 cases a day the past week. The week prior to that, the average was 5,859. A month ago, it was 4,404.

Meanwhile, Minnesota added 5,801 cases, 148 hospitalizations and 15 deaths. It’s the first time the state has been under 20 deaths since Nov. 16.

Minnesota is averaging 6,045.7 cases a day the past week. A week ago that average was 6,510. A month ago it was 2,345.

Iowa data shows 1,941 cases Monday, along 129 hospitalizations and 27 deaths.
