Seven La Crosse residents hospitalized Thursday; Vernon, Winona suffer COVID deaths
Another 40 cases Thursday of COVID-19 in La Crosse County, while both Vernon and Winona suffered virus deaths.
La Crosse has had less than triple-digit cases in six of the past seven days, which hasn’t happened since October, when most of that month was in the double digits.
The county is averaging 78.3 cases per day the past week and has a 25.9% positivity rate over that time.
Seven more county residents were hospitalized for the virus Thursday — making it 88 hospitalized in December.

In surrounding counties, Winona suffered its 34th death — the second in as many days and eighth in the past 14 days. Vernon reported its 24th COVID death — the fourth death in four days and 12th death in 14 days.
Here’s a look at case and hospitalization numbers in surrounding counties for Thursday:
TREMPEALEAU: 23 new cases (24.0 cases/day past week – 2,675 total – 442 active – 16 hospitalized)
VERNON: 11 new cases (14.9 cases/day past week – 1,318 total – 196 active – 13 hospitalized)
JACKSON: 12 new cases (32.4 cases/day past week – 2,020 total – 276 active – 10 hospitalized)
MONROE: 43 new cases (32.7 cases/day past week – 3,027 total – 281 active – 10 hospitalized)
WINONA: 26 new cases (33.6 cases/day past week – 3,198 total)
Statewide, Wisconsin added 4,034 cases, 160 hospitalizations and 57 deaths. That’s just about what the state has been averaging over the past week in all three categories.
Minnesota added 3,523 cases, 220 hospitalizations and 89 deaths. The state has had just four days with 80 or more deaths — two of them in the past two days and all four since Nov. 27.
Minnesota has also had over 200 hospitalizations for three consecutive days — 671 total. The state has had four different runs of five consecutive days with over 200 hospitalizations since Nov. 10 (Nov. 10-14, Nov. 17-21, Nov. 24-29, Dec. 1-5).
Iowa added 2,272 cases, 128 hospitalizations, and 99 deaths. The state has had 201 COVID deaths the past two days.
