La Crosse police arrested a man they say coordinated a 2019 robbery while he was in custody at the La Crosse County Jail.

Police took Michael D. Mitton, 28, into custody after a traffic stop and charged him with conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.

On Oct. 1, 2019, two suspects broke into a victim’s residence and held her at gunpoint, according to police. The suspects were identified through a surveillance system and baby monitor as Audie C. Benford Murphy, 28, and George L. Goins, 38. Both were arrested for the robbery, but police believed one other person was involved. The investigation led them to their ex-roommate, Mitton.
