UW-L students on break until February
Students at UW-La Crosse will have the entire month of January off before they begin a new semester.
The campus announced in the fall that the start of spring classes would be delayed one week until February 1st, to help reduce the spread of the flu and COVID-19. Spring break has been cancelled this year.
La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow says the pandemic and years of tuition freezes have led to some cost-cutting moves.
“We are seeing a decline in enrollment, and that does pose some pretty serious challenges,” said Gow. “Can we fill vacant positions, and do we need to end any kind of travel or any kind of supply and expense expenditures?”
Gow says enrollment at UW-L is down about 100 students from a year ago, in large part because many entering students decided to put off starting college during the fall.
He says the reduced enrollment, and COVID, and a reduction in revenue from an eight-year tuition freeze combined to force the cancellation of some travel programs at UW-L this semester.
