Three COVID-19 deaths in La Crosse County over weekend; Iowa reports record 250 deaths
For the second consecutive day, the state reported another COVID-19 death of a La Crosse County resident on Sunday.
Along with the two reported Saturday, that brings the total in the county to 72. Here are the death totals by month of La Crosse County residents:
- July: 1
- August: 1
- Sept.: 3
- Oct.: 18
- Nov.: 15
- Dec.: 21
- Jan.: 13
La Crosse also added another 41 cases Sunday, bringing the total to 11,728.
The county is now averaging 61.3 cases a day over the past week. Last week, that average was 39. For most of January, the current average had been lower than the week prior, but that has not been the case the past five days.
Statewide, after about a month of inconsistent numbers of deaths a day — where the total one day could be as high as 83, and the next day zero — Iowa data shows 250 deaths Sunday. That’s by far the highest ever. The previous high was 138 (Dec. 19). The state’s daily average deaths jumped from 23 to 59.
A spokesperson for the state’s health department had no specific reason why such a large number came in at once.
Elsewhere, Wisconsin’s numbers Sunday were lower than average, as usual, while Minnesota was pretty close to the daily average the past week, which can be seen at the end of this story.
Here are Sunday’s new cases, hospitalizations and deaths statewide:
SUNDAY | CASES | HOSPITAL | DEATHS |
Wisconsin | 1007 | 55 | 3 |
Minnesota | 996 | 82 | 13 |
Iowa | 307 | 41 | 250 |
