The statewide highway death toll for this January was 34, compared to 24 a year ago.

January was the safest month in 2020, in a year where the Wisconsin death toll almost reached 600.

The 2020 death toll of 598 was the state’s highest in at least five years, which experts say was partly because of speeding and distracted driving.
