Wisconsin traffic toll for 2021 already ahead of last year’s pace

Will the coldest weather of the winter in Wisconsin make highways safer for the next week or so?

Transportation experts might be hoping that traffic will be reduced during the cold spell.

The statewide highway death toll for this January was 34, compared to 24 a year ago.

January was the safest month in 2020, in a year where the Wisconsin death toll almost reached 600.

La Crosse County has had no fatal crashes yet in 2021.  Forest County was the only Wisconsin county with no traffic deaths last year.

The 2020 death toll of 598 was the state’s highest in at least five years, which experts say was partly because of speeding and distracted driving.
