As I See It

Absentee ballots best for nursing home residents

Here we go again. Fresh off unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud in the last election, some Wisconsin lawmakers are raising alarms again about voter fraud. It has to do with residents in Wisconsin nursing homes.  State Rep. Steve Nass is upset that what are called Special Voting Deputies are not being sent to these facilities to assist residents in completing their ballot. The Wisconsin Elections Commission ruled last year that these deputies would not be allowed into nursing homes and care centers because of the risk of transmitting the coronavirus. Instead, for both the November election and next week’s primary, municipal clerks throughout the state have been sending absentee ballots to these residents. That is a prudent step to ensure the health and safety of the vulnerable elderly population. Plus most nursing homes are not even allowing visitors, making it impossible for these voting deputies to visit in person. But Nass thinks this somehow opens the door to voter fraud, while offering no proof. This is yet another attempt to impugn the integrity of our elections and to sow seeds of distrust. We saw how that played out in Washington. Let’s let our election officials do their jobs, rather than suggest they are somehow behaving nefariously.
