Another weekend in the deep freeze before La Crosse gets relief

Relief from the bitter cold is on the way, but first we have to get through a very cold 3-day holiday weekend.

La Crosse weather service meteorologist Mike Kurz says warmer temperatures of 10 above zero or higher could arrive as soon as Tuesday.

Kurz admits that forecasters didn’t necessarily expect the current cold spell to hang on for a full week, or more.

“It was looking like it might just last, you know, three or four days, beginning around the time frame of last weekend,” says Kurz. “And then, the signal was changing and it was looking, this isn’t going anywhere soon.”

Kurz says another hopeful sign is that the odds of another sub-zero stretch after the middle of February are fairly slim.

Friday marked the 7th day in a row in La Crosse that the mercury has dropped below zero, with several days in the past week averaging 20 degrees or more below normal.

Before the current cold spell began on February 6th, the mercury had gone below zero in La Crosse only once this winter, on Christmas Day.
