Chance of flooding in region is near normal for spring
Our weather is finally supposed to warm up by the end of this week, possibly reaching the freezing mark of 32 degrees.
When melting season begins in a few weeks, not much local flooding is expected, according to hydrologist Jon Wetenkamp of the National Weather Service in La Crosse. He says snowfall has been relatively low, with the immediate La Crosse area seeing about 12 to 18 inches of snow on the ground, with lesser amounts farther north on the Mississippi.
Frost depth for this time of year is also less than normal, decreasing the chance of flooding.
Weather in the Coulee Region this winter was fairly mild until mid-January.
Wetenkamp says that low snowfall follows a dry period we’ve had in the last year. He says the dry conditions helped reduce the groundwater, which led to sustained flooding in 2019.
