La Crosse reminds homeowners to shovel their walks, to avoid a bill

Some homeowners in La Crosse may have skipped shoveling snow this week because of the very cold weather.  But the lack of shoveling may come back to bite them, in the form of a bill from the city.

One homeowner complained to the La Crosse board of public works on Monday that he was over-charged when the city shoveled snow at a house he lives in part-time on Denton Street.  The man says he didn’t want to impose on his neighbors to shovel for him all winter.

Board member Gary Padesky argued that the city’s policy on keeping sidewalks clear seems inconsistent, when he sees unshoveled walks on blocks where others have cleared away snow.

When the homeowner brought photos showing that some of his walk apparently had not been snowed on at all, the board reduced the amount of shoveling he was charged for, from 46 feet to just 30 feet.
