Sam King of Logan Middle School had one busy day at home last month…saving members of his family when a fire broke out.

Sam was taking a class at home on his computer when he smelled smoke, and called his mom, who was at work, telling her about the fire.     ]

A fire truck showed up shortly after Sam dialed 9-1-1, and warned others to get out of the house.  He also put out a coffee maker that was on fire.

Sam and his mom were at school this morning when he received a Lifesaver award from the La Crosse Fire Department, and congratulations from Mayor Tim Kabat.

The middle schooler says his family is now getting ready to move to a new house.

Firemen happened to be a few blocks away from the house when they got the call, and responded quickly.

Sam says he didn’t expect an award, and was glad he did the right thing.

Fire Captain John Bayer says Sam’s quick response after smelling smoke saved the fire crews some time.
