La Crosse Middle and High School students back to 5 days in classroom
More than a year has passed since La Crosse School District students were sent home suddenly, to avoid COVID-19.
A statewide school shutdown began on March 18th of 2020, but over the last few weeks, children have been brought back into the La Crosse school buildings for 5-day-a-week classes.
The last group to return to 5-day in-school class…high school and middle school students…comes back on Tuesday. They have been attending in-person only a couple of days a week.
La Crosse superintendent Aaron Engel is encouraged by relaxed social distancing guidelines in the classroom, permitting students to be within 3 feet of each other in class.
Another sign of school returning to normal conditions…the district is asking high school students whether they want to have proms at the beginning of May, or perhaps in the summer.
La Crosse students have gradually returned to school buildings since January, when the lower grades were admitted back to class.
The school board is expressing support for students of different ethnic and gender backgrounds, passing resolutions calling for a “welcoming” and “safe” climate for Hmong, Pacific Islander, and Asian-American students, as well as transgender and LGBTQ students.
The resolution on transgender students declares that the WIAA supports student involvement in sports based on gender identity, and not the sex assigned at birth.
