Special Olympics Wisconsin planning Sun Run and Solar Plunge in June

The Polar Plunge has been a fan favorite in the Coulee Region, raising money for Special Olympics of Wisconsin. They missed the camaraderie of that event this year so they’re planning a 5K Sun Run and Solar Plunge June 5th at Black River Beach.

Participants can take the Solar Plunge into chilly beach water, or an icy pool, and have the chance to run or walk the 5k Sun Run. There will be options to do both events, or pick just one, plus a volleyball tournament. The events are family friendly, with kid runs, food and socially distant activities. For those that would prefer to not participate in person, there will be a virtual option as well.

Kerry Gleode, Assistant Director of the City of La Crosse, Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department said Special Olympics programs are coming back.

“Special Olympics programs are starting up again, slowly, and in a safe manner but we are able to start offering some of our Special Olympics and Special Recreation Programs so we’re really excited to do this event to raise money.”

This event will support Special Olympics Wisconsin athletes and celebrate their Young Athletes program, an innovative and inclusive sport and play program for children ages 2 – 10 years old with and without intellectual disabilities. 

Donations raised in the Sun Run & Solar Plunge will support more than 9,000 Special Olympics Wisconsin athletes across the state. 19 Olympic-style sports are typically offered year-round. Fitness programming and select sports competitions continue to be held during the pandemic in creative, safe and sometimes virtual ways.
