Local justice council seeks members, and may recommend police oversight board
Citizens who want to join a law enforcement committee in La Crosse County have just over a week to apply for a seat.
May 14th is the deadline to submit names to county board chair Monica Kruse for three positions on the Criminal Justice Management Council.
One member who left the council recently, Joella Striebel, said she had been publicly harassed by members of a police union, for being critical of police practices.
Kruse hopes that controversy won’t scare away applicants, and says Striebel held a seat reserved for people who work in the mental health field.
Kruse says the idea of appointing a police oversight board will be discussed at the justice council’s May meeting. appointed by La Crosse County.
The proposed creation of such a committee has been criticized by police in the area, and it followed the deaths of George Floyd and others who died as a result of encounters with law officers.
