La Crosse County Historical Society is launching a new program for training guides to work as volunteers in the historic house museum, Hixon House.

The program would train to give guided tours on buses such as the historic trolley, cruise boat tours and other private tour companies.

Enrollees will have fun learning about the history of the La Crosse region and how to present an engaging narrative.

Peggy Derrick, Executive Director of the La Crosse County Historical Society, told Sam at Classic Hits 94.7 the Hixon house “is really a relic of the early development of the city of La Crosse. It’s a great place to learn. It’s where local history, and decorative arts history come together.

“We’ve brought on board an interpretation coordinator who is creating what we are calling Guide School, so that all the people who are interested in learning to give tours, in learning about the history of their hometown, in their home county, can do it together as a group, have fun, and be prepared to give tours.”

They plan to redo the Hixon House tour with a new focus and new relevance. So, even if you’ve done the tour before, it will be new when you come back again.

The ideal candidates will have an interest in local history and enjoy sharing it with others. Applications are accepted until June 1. More information and online applications can be found here.
