School Garden Day is observed, as kids become “plant scientists”

Students all over Wisconsin are spending part of Thursday learning about plants and gardening, as part of the third annual “Wisconsin School Garden Day.”

Hamilton School in La Crosse invited city and state officials, along with leaders of the school district, to learn about gardening along with the kids.

Bonnie Martin from the GROW program in the La Crosse district says many children might not know much about where their food comes from, so they’re learning about the anatomy of a seed, and how plants get energy.

The state has more than 800 garden sites operated by schools, where students get hands-on experience in producing food.

The Wisconsin School Garden Network says gardens located at schools have given kids a chance to learn in-person during the past year, when many classrooms were closed because of the pandemic.
