As I See It
We should support our police
La Crosse County government is moving ahead with creating a police oversight board. A board that won’t have ANY police representation. This new board will create a whole new county department, with an executive director, investigators, attorneys, analysts and auditors. This will no doubt cost county taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars. The people who are running our county government don’t see the world like most people. As Joella Striebel, the former chair of the committee, said, “Strong communities prove police obsolete. Another world is possible, all cops are bound to a system of violence and oppression.” As Sir Edmund Burke once said, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Call your county supervisor and tell them we don’t need this new board. Better yet, call Board Chair Monica Kruse and tell her you support our police.

I am concerned that this was presented as news when it is filled with misinformation. For example:
The CJMC did not vote to move ahead with an oversight board. The CJMC voted to appoint a formal committee, with a formal charge, to build on the work of the initial exploratory subcommittee and propose a model for local oversight, which would then have to go through several layers of bureaucracy before becoming a reality.
▪️ There is no new county department created, no executive director, etc.
▪️ There is no budget, proposed, allocated, or otherwise. Any budget would be proposed by the formal committee.

Hi Alice, voting to form the committe you spoke of is moving ahead. They didn’t vote not to form the committee. The refernces to staff ate right out of the committee report. I read your letter to the La Crosse Tribune. So lets be honest, you favor creating the police oversight board. Your statememt obacures the fact that the plan to create this board is moving forward and the details proposed byvthe committee.
