As I See It
Delivering free meals a good use of your time
It may be the only human contact they have all day. That is true for hundreds of people who are home-bound in La Crosse. The only time they see another face is when someone volunteers to bring them a meal. One La Crosse County program, the Aging and Disability Resource Center, is among those agencies in our area looking for volunteers to deliver food to those who may not otherwise have any. A recent study by the group found one-third of those who use the program say that friendly face of a volunteer bringing food to them is the only human contact they had that day. Our company, Mid-West Family, just finished a week’s worth of deliveries to La Crosse shut-ins. We worked with Mobile Meals to deliver both a cold lunch and a hot super. Each of our stations delivered one day last week. For WIZM, Mike Hayes and I spent just over an hour delivering the free meals to thankful recipients. It is about more than just the food. It is a human interaction and a welfare check of the most vulnerable. If you have some time, either personally or through work, it is a good use of your time, and it is certainly appreciated by those who may otherwise be going hungry, or at least not have anyone to say hello to.
