Name of murder victim in local ax attack identified

When police in Monroe County first told us about an attack on three people at a home near Sparta, they said it was an edged weapon used in the attack.

Now they are being more specific, saying the weapon used was an ax.

Three people were attacked with the ax, and one of them, 87 year old Bernard Waite, was killed in the attack.

A woman who was also attacked remains hospitalized, while another was treated for her injuries and released. The attack happened late Sunday morning at a home in the town of Sparta.

The suspect in the attack remains hospitalized with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They have not yet named the attacker, other than to say it was a relative of the person killed.

No court appearance has been scheduled for the suspect, at last report.
