Wisconsin lawmakers cheesy to declare official state cheese

Here they go again. Wisconsin politicians, obsessed with naming things as the official state this or that, are at it again. The dairy state has already an official state animal, the cow, milk is the official state beverage, and cheese is the state’s official dairy product. But somehow, Wisconsin has not gotten around to naming an official state cheese. Until now. Lawmakers in Madison are preparing legislation that would name Colby as Wisconsin’s official cheese. That seems an odd choice. Colby is not the most produced cheese in the state, not by a long shot. Mozzarella is the most produced cheese in Wisconsin. The state produces three billion pounds of cheese a year, and one third of that is mozzarella. That is more than Colby, Cheddar and Monterey Jack combined. So why Colby? Apparently it was created in Wisconsin in 1885, in Colby, Wisconsin. So there is some history there. But what does in matter? Why are politicians so obsessed with giving things the title of official something? They should take off their cheeseheads and get back to working on things that are a little less cheesy.
