Race against the calendar to draw new county board maps for La Crosse County
A La Crosse County panel appointed to draw new county board districts will have a relatively short time to do that task.
After losing a year of preparation because of COVID-19, the committee has just over four months to draw maps based on the new census before candidates can start filing for the April election. Committee chair Monica Kruse says they’ve have to push “pedal to the metal.”
“There was an attempt in the legislature…to push the process up, to allow more time, and to go with the established old maps,” Kruse tells the committee. “But the governor vetoed that.”
The redistricting panel had its first meeting on Tuesday.
Kruse says a public hearing on a tentative district map is set for September 13th, and she hopes to have the maps approved by the end of November.
County leaders had said earlier this year that the current 29-district map might have to be used again for next year’s board races, because of delays in getting census figures.
